A college and career preparatory course for high school juniors and seniors

OPENING, ORIENTATION, INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM

1 p.m. Registration opens at Crazy Horse Memorial, in the Orientation Center lobby. Enrollment of students and registration of school representatives. Distribution of workshop supplies, materials, including emergency contact list and rules of conduct. Assignment of rooms and roommates at hotels in Custer. Collection of completed scholarship applications. Each student will be photographed by Vonnie Majors for pictorial directory. Those who arrive by 3 p.m. and who receive their room assignments in time, may then proceed to Custer and check in with workshop staff member stationed at Custer hotels. Students must return to Crazy Horse by 3:50 p.m.

3 p.m. Deadline for students and school groups to arrive at Crazy Horse.

4 p.m. Workshop begins. Welcome. Call to order and opening prayer. Orientation Center Theater 1

4:15 p.m. Why we are here. Keynote. An invitation to explore journalism. Presenter: Gerard Baker. Introduced by Dalton Walker.

4:50 p.m. Logistics and staff introductions. Discussion and explanation of curriculum and program. An orientation to the rules, guidelines, expectations and logistics of the workshop.

5:25 p.m. Explanation of first assignment. Presenter: Jack Marsh

5:30 p.m. Dinner. Students sit with their roommates, interview each other for after-dinner introductions. Laughing Water Restaurant

6:15 p.m. Moment of inspiration: Why I do what I do. Presenter: Dalton Walker. Orientation Center Theater 1

6:20 p.m. Student introductions by their student partners. Moderated by Doris Giago and Chuck Baldwin.

7:15 p.m. Break.

7:25 p.m. Moment of inspiration: Why I do what I do. Presenter: Kevin Abourezk

7:30 p.m. Journalism in 2010 and beyond. Presenter: Arnold Garson

7:45 p.m. Crazy Horse Memorial, a place to explore dreams. Introduction and showing of “Dynamite and Dreams,” followed with welcome from workshop host, Ruth Ziolkowski.

8:15 p.m. What it takes to succeed as a journalist. A Q&A and discussion with Al Neuharth. Moderated by Jack Marsh.

9 p.m. Distribution of pictorial directory, followed by adjournment. Shuttle bus returns students to hotels in Custer. Riding bus is mandatory for students.

10 p.m. Lights out and bed-check by chaperones. All students must remain in their assigned rooms for the night. If an emergency arises, students are required to report to their school representative.

JOURNALISM FUNDAMENTALS

8:35 a.m. Core values of journalism. Truth, accuracy and fairness; role of press freedom in an open society; ethics, integrity and behavior. Presenter: Randell Beck.

9 a.m. Latest tools for journalists and multiple platforms for story telling. An interactive demonstration. Presenters: Val Hoeppner joined by others.

9:50 a.m. Break.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seminar for teachers. Consecutive sessions and discussions about journalism for high school educators attending workshop. From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with a break for lunch. Presenters: Doris Giago and Chuck Baldwin. Library on lower level of Orientation Center

10 a.m. Students divided into small groups or tracks. Three concurrent skills-based classes demonstrating and engaging students in fundamentals of: (Group 1) Photography and cameras led by Justin Hayworth and Devin Wagner; (Group 2) Interviewing, audio gathering and recorders led by Val Hoeppner; (Group 3) Reporting and writing led by Dalton Walker and Kevin Abourezk. Mountain View Room and classrooms on lower level

11 a.m. Students divided into small groups or tracks. Three concurrent skills-based classes demonstrating and engaging students in fundamentals of: (Group 1) Reporting and writing; (Group 2) Photography and cameras; (Group 3) Interviewing, audio gathering and recorders. 12 p.m. Lunch

1 p.m. Students divided into small groups or tracks. Three concurrent skills-based classes demonstrating and engaging students in fundamentals of: (Group 1) Interviewing, audio gathering and recorders; (Group 2) Reporting and writing; (Group 3) Photography and cameras. Mountain View Room and classrooms on lower level

2:05 p.m. Moment of inspiration: Why I do what I do. Presenter: Devin Wagner. Orientation Center Theater 1

2:10 p.m. Observation and accuracy. Spotting the news and getting it right. Instruction in interviewing, observation skills and accuracy, including sourcing, note-taking, fact-checking. Optional showing of Newseum video titled Sources, RT 7:36. Presenter: Margaret Holt, joined by others.

3 p.m. Trip up the mountain and group photo. Cameras and recorders issued to those students who are assigned to multimedia groups on Wednesday. Explanation of mountain trip and completion of release forms. Presentation about the mountain carving by Crazy Horse Memorial staff member. On the arm of the Crazy Horse sculpture. (In case of inclement weather, the briefing will occur in the Orientation Center Theater 1 and the mountain trip will follow.)

4:15 p.m. Did you get it right? De-briefing after mountain trip. Presenter: Margaret Holt.

4:30 p.m. Moment of inspiration: Why I do what I do. Presenter: John Irby. Orientation Center Theater 1

4:35 p.m. Great photojournalism. Showing of short Newseum overview video, followed by the film A Glimpse of Life about Pulitzer photographers. Introduced by Randell Beck.

5 p.m. Dinner. Laughing Water Restaurant

An evening of inspiration and fellowship.

6 p.m. Moment of inspiration: Why I do what I do. Presenter: Katie Oyan. Orientation Center Theater 1

6:05 p.m. An interview with Ruth Ziolkowski. Moderated by Jack Marsh.

7 p.m. Break

7:15 p.m. Social media: Telling the news in 140 characters. Presenter: Mark Trahant

7:45 p.m. NewsMania, hosted by Maggie Crawford.

JOURNALISTS AT WORK IN NEWSROOM

8:30 a.m. Workshop resumes. Students report to the newsroom and meet with their mentors. Get acquainted and prepare for the day. Mountain View Room on lower level

8:45 a.m. Stories assigned. Students and mentors meet in three separate groups with their respective line editors (multimedia editor, either of the news editors). Receive their assignments for the day.

9:30 a.m. Breaking news. Mountain blast.

9:45 a.m. Morning news meeting mandatory for all, run by Native Journal managing editor Mark Trahant. Multimedia editor Val Hoeppner and news editors John Irby and Katie Oyan present news budgets for the day.

10:15 a.m. Students, accompanied by mentors, pursue assignments.

Noon. Lunch. Laughing Water Restaurant

1 p.m. Students, in partnership with mentors, continue working on assignments.

3 p.m. Afternoon news meeting run by the managing editor Mark Trahant. Line editors give progress updates on students’ assignments.

3:15 p.m. Students, guided by mentors, get stories and projects ready for editing and review by line editors.

4 to 5:45 p.m. Stories and projects are edited and are checked by line editors, posted to web and/or turned over to the Native Journal layout/design desk. Half or more of the Native Journal pages due to be completed, proofread and sent (as PDFs).

5:45 p.m. Students go to dinner. Laughing Water Restaurant

5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Mentors and editors meet. Orientation Center Theater 1

7 p.m. Presentation of the day’s multimedia projects. Tentative location: Orientation Center Theater 1

7:30 p.m. Students report to the newsroom, change groups and meet with their new mentors. Get acquainted and prepare for Thursday. Mountain View Room on lower level

7:45 p.m. Stories assigned for Thursday. Students and mentors meet in three separate groups with their respective line editors (multimedia editor, either of the news editors). Receive their assignments for Thursday.

8:30 p.m. Students, in partnership with their new mentors, agree on a plan for Thursday and do any pre-reporting that they can.

9 p.m. Adjournment. Shuttle bus returns students to hotels in Custer. Riding bus is mandatory for students.

10 p.m. Lights out and bed-check by chaperones. All students must remain in their assigned rooms for the night. If an emergency arises, students are required to report to their school representatives.

9 a.m. Students, accompanied by mentors, pursue assignments.

10 a.m. Breaking news. To be assigned to a student reporter and photographer. Interview and press conference opportunity with members of the South Dakota Year of Unity Committee. Board Room, second floor, Crazy Horse office center

Noon. Lunch. Laughing Water Restaurant

1 p.m. Students, in partnership with mentors, continue working on assignments.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Seminar for teachers. Electronic resources for educators. “More Than a Byte of Google.” Presenters: Joan Upell and Julie Erickson. Library on lower level of Orientation Center

2 p.m. Afternoon news meeting run by the managing editor. Line editors give progress updates on students’ assignments.

2:15 p.m. Students, guided by mentors, get stories and projects ready for editing and review by line editors.

3 to 5 p.m. Stories and projects are edited and are checked by line editors, posted to web and/or turned over to the Native Journal layout/design desk.

3:30 p.m. (or when assignments are done) Students complete Kuder assessments and meet with mentors, staff for college and career counseling. Coordinated by: Chuck Baldwin

5 p.m. Deadline for layout/design desk to send final pages (PDFs) of Native Journal

6:30 p.m. Depart on buses for Rapid City Journal. Riding bus is mandatory for students. Space is available for all workshop participants.

7:20 p.m. Arrive at Rapid City Journal print plant to observe 7:30 p.m. press run of Native Journal. Time permitting, visit Journal newsroom, located nearby in another building.

8:15 p.m. Buses depart Rapid City for return trip back to hotels in Custer.

9 p.m. Buses deliver students to hotels in Custer. Riding bus is mandatory for students.

10 p.m. Lights out and bed-check by chaperones. All students must remain in their assigned rooms for the night. If an emergency arises, students are required to report to their school representatives.

10:30 a.m. Distribution of evaluation forms to students. Break.

10:40 to 10:45 a.m. Presentation of $1,000 Crazy Horse Memorial Journalism Scholarships by Jadwiga Ziolkowski and representatives of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. Scholarships honor the memories and legacies of Robb DeWall, Lem Price and Peggy Sagen. Orientation Center Theater 1

10:45 to 11 a.m. “Where We Go from Here.” Introduction by Breanna Roy. Presenter: John Bodette. Orientation Center Theater 1

11 to 11:30 a.m. Closing program, graduation and special presentation and honor song by the Standing Horse drum group. Orientation Center Theater 1
