Chips Watch: Chipsters accept awards, fellowships, new assignments

Moving on:

Markeshia Ricks (Summer 2002) is a state government reporter for the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser. Previously she was a state capitol correspondent for The Anniston (Ala.) Star.

Serena Maria Daniels (Summer 2004) accepted a two-year residency at the Chicago Tribune, working as a reporter on the metro desk. She says, “Chicago’s a big change from sunny Southern California but a worthwhile new chapter in my life… I’ve always admired fellow Chipsters and mentors who’ve traveled the country working at various papers to expand their knowledge in the newsroom. Now, I’m proud to include myself in that category.” Previously she was a reporter at The Orange County Register.

Jorge Barrientos (Summer 2006) is an education reporter for The Bakersfield Californian. Barrientos was laid off by the paper in March and rehired in November.

Devin Wagner (Spring 2008) has accepted a photography job at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S. D. Previously he was a photographer at The Jackson (Tenn.) Sun.

Carley Dryden (Summer 2008) is Manhattan Beach editor for The Beach Reporter, a weekly publication covering Los Angeles’ South Bay community. Previously she was Manhattan Beach editor for Easy Reader.

Sally Ho (Summer 2008) is a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times, working at the media wire desk and covering breaking news, cops and crime. Ho graduated from the University of Colorado in May and was a summer intern at the Chicago Tribune.

2009 class:

Spring Scholar Anthony Williams is editor/producer for dallasnews.com/entertainment and guidelive.com, The Dallas Morning News’ listings sites for events, venues and restaurants. Williams is a recent graduate of the University of Texas, Arlington.

Emma Carew is an editorial research assistant at the Chronicle in Washington, D.C., working for both the Chronicle of Philanthropy and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She says, “I work with the very talented data/research unit here at the Chronicle, and (it is) a really fantastic opportunity for me to continue to grow my computer-assisted reporting skills.” Carew previously was a fall intern for the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Andres Navarro is an intern at The Bulletin in Bend, Ore.

Juana Summers is graduating this month from the University of Missouri and has accepted a spring reporting internship at the Missouri Capitol for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Awards:

Jason Hidalgo (Summer 1995), business reporter for the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal, was awarded a business fellowship by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism. The fellowship, valued at $2,000, covered seminar expenses. The seminars take place during Reynolds Business Journalism Week at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where the Reynolds Center is based. In his extra time, Hidalgo moonlights as a guide and writer for About.com’s Portable Electronics section, http://portables.about.com/.

Kainaz Amaria (Summer 2007), photojournalist and multimedia producer, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to go to India for nine months. She says, “I’m really thrilled to be given this opportunity. I left my internship at the St. Petersburg Times about a month shy of completing a full year. It was a tough decision but I couldn’t turn down the chance to be a Fulbright Scholar.”

Diego James Robles (Summer 2008) of Ohio University won first place in the sports feature category at the annual National Press Photographers Association’s College Photographer of the Year contest.

Back to school:

Natasha Robinson (Summer 2007) is pursuing a Master of Science in psychology through the University of Phoenix. Robinson is also a substitute teacher in the Michigan cities of Kalamazoo and Portage. Previously she was a reporter for the Rocky Mount (N.C.) Telegram.

Baby:

Julie Hubbard Henson (Spring and Summer 2002), education reporter for The Macon (Ga.) Telegraph, and her husband welcomed Reese Ally Henson on Aug. 19. She weighed nine pounds, four ounces, and was 21 inches long.

Wedding:

Jordan Hernandez (Summer 2003) and Jenny Diaz were married Sept. 4 at Chapel Dulcinea in Austin, Texas, where they both live. The reception was held at Habana Restaurant, where guests danced the night away to a local salsa band, Ritmo 3. Jordan and Jenny work at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.
