I think it’s great that Gannett is still awarding Chips Quinn Scholars. This started many years ago when I was at the former Knight Ridder Inc. We established a similar program for minority students at the high school and college levels in 1986.
Gannett graciously created the scholarship for Chips Quinn after he died in an automobile accident. His father John, was a long-time executive with Gannett and USA Today.
I always treasured the Knight-Ridder, Gannett relationship because they were two great newspaper organizations. They have offered many opportunities for minorites and women and were responsible for changing the face of the newspaper industry.
