In 2011, The Diversity Institute became the new home for Joe Grimm’s Ask the Recruiter column.

Joe Grimm began recruiting fulltime in 1990 when the Detroit Free Press named him newsroom recruiter. In that role, he also recruited for other Knight Ridder newsrooms and, following its purchase of the Detroit Free Press in 2005, he recruited for the Gannett Co., Inc.,

Grimm left the Free Press in 2008 to become a visiting editor in residence at Michigan State University. He has continued to recruit for organizations including Patch.com, the Freedom Forum and the Medill journalism cherubs program, as well as Michigan State.

Grimm began answering recruiting questions online in 1997 with the launch of the JobsPage. That led to this column, which began as a blog, and two books on journalism jobs.

His goal is to break through the barriers that hide information from job-seekers and to give them the strategies they need to advance journalism careers in all news media.
