The major difference between my school paper and internship is my internship offers a great variety of shooting pictures, gathering audio and of course writing. At my school, I am basically able to write stories and shoot video. I love that the Forum is opening up the multimedia doors for me that were shut before, because the only way I can learn is through trial and error.

The difference between the two is the content I get to publish. I’m writing about a beer warehouse for the business section, carnival workers for the front page centerpiece and a Freedom Feet campaign for the regular new section. At school I wrote about cookie fundraisers and H1N1. It just seems a little more serious than stuff you have to write about at school.
At my student newspaper we had laptops and I rarely saw other reporters or editors. Here I can ask a question out loud and about three different reporters will answer me and help me out. Im hoping to do multimedia soon and that’s something my school paper never does.
I’m at the Fargo Forum in Fargo, N.D. by the way.

One week down, and the internship is going pretty smoothly. I knew it would be challenging, and it is—but I never expected to be in the full swing of things so quickly.

Each work day passes by easily, almost too easily as I race around the clock to get things done. Talking to editors about stories is a bit more difficult than I thought, but I expect these things will become easier as my time there goes on.

I’m learning how to take notes and write stories quicker, which has been rewarding. I’m having fun, and I hope I become better at enterprising my own story ideas.

I am pleased to inform you that interning with the Argus Leader has been extremely helpful and fun! I’m learning many new things about journalism everyday. Just like AIJI.

I’m thankful for coming into an internship at the age of twenty. I am treated as an employee and there is free coffee provided at all times. Who could ask for more?

I was fortunate to have Chuck Baldwin’s help my first week at the Argus. Not only did he help me improve my journalism skills, we got to know each other better and had a lot of fun. Being pointed in the right direction has helped out tremendously.

I am rooming with AIJI alumni Elise Watkins. Elise and I had coffee with Janine Harris and catching up was a treat. We will be meeting again soon.

I have improved my interviewing skills but need to work on being more concise. My first article was about Sioux Falls Playground Replacement Program. To check it out visit:

or log onto http://www.argusleader.com and search playground accessibility.

Also, Elise and I will finish creating our video on the Hot Harley Nights parade today. We still have to edit it, but I believe it will be a success! Keep a look out for it.

Another thing I need to work on is accuracy. Elyse Watkins is actually spelled this way. I always make sure to double check name spelling and quotes. By re-reading them to the person I am interviewing, I can be sure to be more accurate.
