Wet Weather Settles Over Vermillion

VERMILLION, S.D.- The month of June has been on the wet side for this small town of 10,000 with a new batch of storms brewing earlier this week.

“Everyone who’ve I’ve seen here so far has been talking quite a bit about the rain,” said, Elizabeth Yng-Wong, a documentarian from Los Angeles. “Most of the time when I’ve been here over the summer there’s been really huge one day storms but not extended rain storms.”

The latest string of showers hit Vermillion on June 15, which delayed construction projects and kept people indoors. Rain gutters along the city streets were flowing with rain run off, city parks were vacant and people watched the rain from indoors.

“These last couple of weeks have been pretty rainy –almost every other day,” said Johnne McMahon, University of South Dakota art student.

“I am kind of ready for summer to start,” McMahon said while carrying a multi-colored umbrella on his way to work.

  1. Jacelle & Benny,

I like the sense of place you brought to your story. Nice images and the mailman is a classic — as is the photo inside the barn.

It really looked and sounded like Vermillion in the rain!
