The work of five Oklahoma artists, known as the “Urban Five,” is on display through June 25 at The University of South Dakota. Originally created for the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, the art addresses Native American health issues and promotes healing.
“Unlike our reservations, Native American Art has no boundaries,” said the Urban Five in a joint statement.
Featured artists are Marwin Begaye, Navajo; Gerald Cournoyer, Oglala Lakota; Brent Greenwood, Ponca/Chickasaw; Thomas Poolaw, Kiowa/Delaware; and Shan Goshorn, Eastern Band Cherokee.
“This is the first time they’ve ever shown in an art show together,” said Eddie Welch, university art galleries director. “Hopefully, some major galleries throughout the country will pick up this show.”
Artwork is on exhibition in the Main Gallery (http://www.usd.edu/cfa/Art/UniversityGalleries/maingallery.cfm) of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 5 p.m.
Meredith Moriak and Gemma Givens are student journalists at the American Indian Journalism Institute.

Gemma & Meredith,
Nice, nice job.
I learned something about the role of Native American art in its historical context. I am glad you included a lot of it in your show.
